I added small amethyst nuggets into a gold plated prong. These studs are approx. 1/4" at its widest point.

The come with butterfly clutch backings. 

Due to the nature of the stones, each pair of earrings will slightly vary in shape and size. Also, prong placement is very much dependent on the shape of the stone, so that will vary as well.
